You do not require a referral. A referral is not required for rebates for Private Health Insurance. A doctor's referral to the speech pathologist is required if you are going to claim rebates through Medicare on a Complex or Chronic Care Plan.

Can I claim services on Medicare?

Clients may be eligible for a Medicare Chronic or Complex Care Plan. Please discuss this with your doctor. These care plans require a referral from your G.P. and enables the client to have 5 sessions with a speech pathologist over the year with a medicare rebate. Please note there is a gap between the medicare rebate and the fee. Please see www.health.gov.au/mbsprimarycareitems for more information.

Can I claim services on my private health insurance?

Rebates are available for speech pathology services through Private Health Insurers. Please contact your Private Health Insurance fund for information about rates, as rebates vary depending on the fund and the policy you are on. Clients claiming on Private Health Insurance will pay for the speech therapy session at the time of the consultation, and then take the receipt to your Private Health fund for a rebate. You cannot claim the Medicare Gap fee from your Private Health Insurer. Rebates can be claimed from either your private health insurance or Medicare not both at the same time.
